Monday, 5 November, 2018 – Eswatini Water Services Corporation ( EWSC) continues to be a go-to water utility in the region for countries seeking South to South Corporation, where Africa is given an opportunity to learn from Africa
A twelve member delegation from Kaduna State Water Corporation in Nigeria, led by Member of Parliament, Honourable Mohammed Hashimu Abubakar visited EWSC to extensively engage on Performance improvement plans and Water sector reforms.
The benchmarking visit funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) took place over a five day period, where both utilities discussed on Quality Assurance, IT Systems, Non-Revenue Water and Performance Management.
The Africa water vision 2025 calls for an Africa where there is equitable and sustainable use and management of water resources for poverty alleviation, socio-economic development, regional cooperation and the environment.
Formation of strategic alliances with other water utilities for purposes of knowledge sharing is a step towards the right direction for the realisation of that goal.
The delegation also got an opportunity to tour some of EWSC projects where they got a visual appreciation of the work that EWSC does.
Speaking at the farewell dinner Acting EWSC Managing Director Nontombi Maphanga stated that the mission was beneficial for EWSC in how it stimulated thought provoking and insightful discussions such as Governance and accountability in utilities, Economic benefits of the stringent targets e.g NRW and water quality guidelines and redefining of customer service charter benchmarks.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry for Natural Resources and Energy Mrs Winnie Stewart through Dumsani Mngomezulu highlighted the importance of institutional reforms and capacity building making reference to the transition of the Eswatini Water Services Corporation from Swaziland Water and Sewerage Board. She emphasized that it was not an easy task but it was imperative in addressing challenges associated with the provision of water and sanitation.
